    The Truth Behind Niggeritis

    By Tiffany Williams

Many of us black folks are very familiar with the term niggeritis or itis. We typically use this term to describe that overwhelming feeling of sleepiness after devouring a huge meal.  The term itis refers to inflammation or swelling of the stomach after excess eating, and the term nigger of course refers to black people.  Clearly us black folks are not the only ones who eat enormous amounts of food, and technically the word nigger does not mean black person at all! It’s just a stupid word that the white man decided to direct toward us.  So with that being said White, Black, Spanish, and Asians have all experienced niggeritis!!  Now that I’ve got that off my chest let me explain why we get that feeling of laziness and sleepy after a huge filling meal.

Tryptophan is one of the 10 essential amino acids that the body uses to make the protein it needs. It is well known for its role in the production of signals that triggers relaxation, restfulness, and sleep. One of tryptophan’s functions is to serve as a precursor for serotonin, which helps the body regulate appetite, sleep patterns, and mood. Its ability to raise serotonin levels has been used therapeutically in the treatment of a variety of conditions, most notably insomnia, depression, and anxiety.
I’m pretty sure you’re wondering what tryptophan has to do with niggeritis and here it is:

As I mentioned above, tryptophan is an essential amino acid, which means the body cannot produce this and it must be consumed in your diet. Meals high in carbohydrates and proteins make tryptophan more available to the brain.  Once tryptophan reaches the brain it is converted to serotonin and then to melatonin, which is a hormone that regulates sleepiness.  Normally melatonin is secreted at night by the pineal gland in the brain to induce and maintain sleep, but when you consume an enormous meal this process can happen at any time of the day, causing you to feel sleepy soon after.

So next time you fall into a complete coma after you eat don’t fix your mouth to say you got niggeritis!! Just say you are suffering from early onset sleepiness caused by excess amounts of tryptophan in the brain.
