Business Relations Developer

SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS:

The African s Education and Defense Fund (APEDF) needs your skills and talents to build Uhuru Furniture and Collectibles in Philadelphia. Be part of the team making lasting changes to impact on health, education, human rights and future of the African community.

You will work to develop new and existing relationships in the business sector resulting in an increase in high quality, sellable furniture donations and increased customer support.

Tasks:

  • Build and develop relationships with potentially supportive businesses, community members and sectors to ensure ongoing donation referrals, develop regular donors and bring in high quality, large quantity and inventory donations, as well as expand customer base.
  • Build and maintain contact database and email list of partners.
  • Build relationships with existing partners and develop an appreciation program.
  • Organize and carry out partner and potential partner site visits, meetings and tabling opportunities in the business sector
  • Organize appealing compilations of promotional materials and compose emails and letters to partners and potential partners
  • Maintain consistent and timely follow-up with partners and potential partners
  • Track results, submit daily reports and identify new key contacts of the non-profit organization for special recognition

Knowledge, Skills, and Other Characteristics:

  • Professional PR, marketing and customer service experience
  • Passion for social justice and economic development for the African community
  • Agree with the mission statement of APEDF, Uhuru Furniture and APEDF policies
  • Self-motivated with good communication, flexibility, efficiency, attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent phone manner and writing skills.
  • Innovation with strategies to reach people and make connections
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and basic computer skills
  • Proficiency in Dreamweaver, Indesign, Filemaker Pro a plus
  • Able to articulate the mission and programs of APEDF to the public.

Physical Requirements:

Physical requirements include but t limited to being able to efficiently travel throughout Center City and beyond. Must have transportation.

Social Media / Internet Marketing Internship

Uhuru Furniture has been picking up furniture donations and raising resources and support for the APEDF programs for over 17 years. The challenge is getting our name out there in the transitional environment of Philadelphia. We are seeking a motivated individual with a passion for social justice and social media!

Tasks:

  • Help create content, publicize and promote marketing campaigns
  • Coordinate furniture postings and sidebar promotional content of the Uhuru Furniture blog
  • Increase promotions on external social media networks, online calendars and blogs
  • Daily facebook and twitter promotions
  • Contribute to the marketing department.s strategy including: brainstorming, social networking and internet marketing
  • Report weekly on results and participate in bi-weekly team meetings

Knowledge, Skills, and Other Characteristics:

  • Passion about the web and social media sites; strategic thinker and keen sense of the social web
  • Proficient in social networking sites
  • Excellent communication and computer skills

This is an unpaid, 6 month internship; start immediately. Commitment is 20 hrs per week, can be done remotely.

Driver/Warehouse/Truck Coordinator

SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS:

The African People.s Education and Defense Fund (APEDF) needs your skills and talents to coordinate furniture donation pick-ups, warehouse functionality and truck maintenance for Uhuru Furniture & Collectibles in Center City, Philadelphia. Be part of our team building sustainable economic development in the hands of the African community and making a real social impact in Philadelphia.

Under the supervision of APEDF.s Uhuru Furniture Manager, you will lead the truck team on a daily schedule of donation pick-ups and implement your service, furniture handling, efficiency and problem-solving skills to bring in two to three truckloads daily of quality furniture donations.

Tasks:

Responsible for the safe moving and handling of furniture donations and the store.s truck; provide training and leadership for staff and volunteers; represent the stance of APEDF and give out appropriate literature to each donor; coordinate the transport and storage of furniture to and from the warehouse.

Carefully and safely drive a 16' box truck throughout the city and suburbs; lead and maintain APEDF stance among staff and volunteers; build and maintain relationships with private donors, business contacts and their staff; assess quality and salability of furniture donations (training provided); lead a truck navigator/assistant mover in all aspects of the job; remove furniture (three flights or less) from donors homes; carefully pack truck and preserve the original condition of furniture donations; maintain consistent and clear communication with donations scheduler and all donors throughout the daily routes; maintain punctuality on daily schedule; assist with display of items at storefront; warehouse coordination including loading, unloading, inventory, organization and cleanliness; carry out all policies and procedures regarding truck care including keeping it clean, safe, legal, secure and in working order; arrange for truck maintenance and repair as needed; build and sustain relationships with skilled mechanics and parts supply companies; research and assess competitive parts and repair pricing; keep up the daily truck log and maintenance log; actively participate in staff meetings and local APEDF events and activities; provide consistent and excellent customer service.

  • At least 2-5 years professional truck/box van driving experience (references required).
  • Valid PA driver.s license (NO CDL REQUIRED).
  • Excellent knowledge of furniture handling, packing and loading techniques.
  • Self-motivated with good communication, leadership, organizational skills.
  • Clean driving record. Capable of teaching individuals and classes.

  • Skilled in developing and maintaining effective interpersonal relationships, and in oral and written communication.
  • Must be efficient, team player, able to multi-task and relate to men and women of all ages from all communities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical requirements include but aren.t limited to lifting of up to 100lbs, lifting furniture over your head. Must have a strong back.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalency or higher education (adequate experience will be considered in lieu of degree)
