St. Petersburg Store is Closed
The Uhuru Furniture & Collectibles store in St. Petersburg, Florida has closed as of February 9, 2008. We want to express our deepest appreciation to all the shoppers, donors and volunteers who have supported the store over the last 6 years!
The swift collapse of the Florida housing market has made a severe impact on furniture sales and donations, combined with the drop in tourism, and the closure of so many small businesses on Central Avenue to make way for the now-stalled condo construction have all contributed to the store's inability to be a viable fundraising institution.
It was a lively community store which gave people an opportunity to support economic development for the African community and all the programs of African People's Education and Defense Fund which vigorously continue, including Uhuru Youth Basketball, the All People's TyRon Lewis Community Gym and Wellness Center. We will miss everyone very much!
The Uhuru Furniture stores in Oakland, California of 18 yrs and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania of 14 yrs continue to grow as strong economic development institutions of APEDF.
